The Literary Canon is the body of work that makes up Literature (with a capital ‘L’). These works are those which are generally respected and studied – see wisegeek link here: http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-a-litera… The canon changes over time as new works are written or some existant works become accepted following political or religious changes. Works rarely drop out of the canon – as it is the quality of writing and its message NOT its current relevance that is judged, social change shouldn’t affect its inclusion negatively. Some works drop out of fashion however; as society changes their relevance may be reduced and their message faded. This fashion in what makes ‘literature’ doesn’t change the quality of these writings but a lack of social relevance may lessen their impact and this can lower their perceived status within the canon.
