What should I look for in a synth module?
Most synths and synth modules are designed with keyboard players in mind and thus they often lack or skimp on the things that a critical to wind controller players. Conversely, hyped features such as polyphony, multi-timbrality, and flexible envelopes aren’t as important to us. A single note of polyphony as found on the Yamaha VL70-m is just fine in many cases for a wind controller player. Even velocity sensitivity isn’t all that useful except for programming attacks and for percussive/plucked patches. When deciding on a synth and you are not a planning on programming it, it may be wise to choose a synth that has wind controller sounds already available such as these. If a synth is listed here then there is a good chance it is at least usable as a wind controller module. Programming a synth to make it respond properly to a wind controller can be rather daunting, so this should be a serious consideration when choosing a synth for use with your wind controller.
