What should I look for in a mentor?
When looking for a mentor, first begin by finding those that are successful at what it is you want to do. There are a lot of people who hire themselves out as coaches or offer advice that sounds good, but if they aren’t actually doing it (and loving what they do), their advice is useless to you.
Next, find someone with whom you have a good rapport. If you look up to them, great – but do you like them? Do they like you? Do they see potential in you? A good mentor will take you on because they believe in you.
Finally, make sure your mentor is not only willing to teach you what they know about the business end as well at the art end of whatever it is you’re looking to do or become – but that they are also willing and able to motivate you to move forward. A good mentor will kick you in the tush when you need it!
Once you have found a mentor that has the time and desire to answer your questions and motivate you to the next step, consider becoming a mentor for someone who is just beginning. Many mentors take on mentees because of how much they learn from teaching.
Good luck!
