The Honors option allows students in the Honors program to “upgrade” a regular departmental course to one that counts for Honors. You, as the professor, must agree to do this. If you agree, the student prepares a proposal for additional work which must be acceptable to you. (Make certain that everything that you expect to be done is spelled out clearly.) The Honors Program Director must approve the proposal. General guidelines can be found at http://www.csbsju.edu/honors/. After their first year, students can propose to do Individual Learning Projects (ILP’s) with specific faculty. It is your choice whether to accept ILP proposals; it provides a great learning opportunity but involves more work for you. Both the number of credits and the nature of ILP’s vary, but most departments insist that it be rooted in previous course work and provide the student an opportunity to explore an issue in ways that would not be done in a regular class.
