WHat should i get a 22 wmr or 17 hmr?
So, the .22 WMR is definately going to hit harder than the .17 HMR. If you do a quick scan of different brands, you see Kinetic Energy numbers from about 166 – 245 foot pounds. If you look at .22 WMR you will see at 300 foot pounds and generally into the 330 – 340 range. Now the .17 HMR is certainly faster, but the really light bullet – typically between 17 – 20 grains or so is going be somewhat more sensitive to cross winds and such than the 40 grain .22 WMR which is more than twice the weight but only about 1/3 larger in profile. Now, for rabbits and other gopher or praire dog size animals it doesn’t really matter, and even with something the size of a fox shot placement matters more than the size of the round. The rounds are about the same price to shoot, but at least anecdotally I think there are more guns chambered for .22WMR to choose from and the ammo is a bit more plentiful. So I’d probably lean that direction, but if you really like the .17 HMR there’s nothing wrong with it an
