Was the plastering done by a proffessional plasterer , if so get in touch with him and ask if he knows / can suggest what is the best type of covering / paint for your new plaster . Perhaps the first coat should be either a sealer ( to stop damp / steam / moisture from entering from either the out side or the inside of the new plaster ) this could be clear ( as is water ) or perhaps if a sealer is included as part of the paint manufacturers paint making process then you might be able to choose the colour you want , paint the walls with the knowledge that they are being sealed @ the same time . If the plasterer isnt helpful or you did the plastering yourself then I suggest you consult the plaster manufacturer . If you are still uncertain consult a local painting firm , preferably one that has been in the buisness for a number of years , not some part-time staff in the biggest in the universe , do-it- yourself hardware store in existance , some times their only training in these store is

Sand any lumps and bumps, and give your walls a coat of watered down white emulsion or thin wallpaper paste. This gives it a sort of protective layer to stop the plaster soaking up all of your coloured paint and having to do loads of coats, and plaster soaks up paint quickly.

Make sure the walls are completely dry and then you need to seal them, either with a watered down sealer like Unibond or watered down emulsion
