What should I do to get in shape and ready for Cheer try outs?
LOTS of stretching will help not only with your jumps, but with flexibility for things like the splits and even for flying. Stretch out your legs by doing the simplest things. Butterflies, hurdlers, lunges, all of that will help you. The longer you can hold it, the better. The farther you can stretch down, great! You’ll also want to stretch your arms and your wrists. Now, things you need to know for tryouts: At my high school, they taught us a dance and a cheer. We then had to make up our own cheer, along with doing 2 jumps, a cartwheel, and the splits. The jumps and kicks to know are a right and left kick, a right and left hurdler, a right and left hurkey, tabletop, toe touch, and pike. A great way to build up leg strength (and to help your jumps) is to stand up straight with your legs slightly apart, jump up, and when you come back down squat down to the floor, and repeat.
