What should i do if a student starts crying in front of me and is unable to stop?
although giving a hug is a nice idea, I think it would be better to put one hand on the student…either on the student’s hand or shoulder depending on the age of the child and then in a calm voice ask the student if they would like to go to …..(the back of the class where it is quiet, or the bathroom for a couple of minutes to compose themselves…) and then after the child has calmed down and you have a minute or two to spare of undivided attention, perhaps ask the child if they would like to talk, and be prepared to either listen to the reasons why the child was emotional, or perhaps to hear, No, thanks anyway but I’m ok.
