What should I buy first, an electric or bass guitar?
There is very little you can do solo with either – they are both band-oriented instruments, but bass is significantly more context-oriented, it just sounds boring on its own, unless you’re a Jaco Pastorius or Richard Bona or such. Besides, to play bass properly, you have to learn new techniques and a new mentality that is not like that of the guitar, so I’d say your transition to the electric guitar will likely be easier and smoother. People who see bass as just a 4-stringed guitar are not real bassists and generally are useless to bands. As for decent or good basses, forget Pete Wentz and dorky losers like that.
