What should happen when the police arrive?
Once the police arrive, they will interview you, the other driver or drivers involved in the incident and any witnesses. Do not admit to any fault or negligence. Simply tell the officer what happened. You may also want to politely but firmly insist that the police issue a traffic citation to the driver or drivers responsible for the accident. Upon leaving the scene, the police officer will provide you with an Illinois Crash Report, an Illinois Motorist Report, or some other similarly named report stating the names, addresses, phone numbers and insurance of the drivers involved in the incident, and often the names, addresses and phone numbers of any passengers of any of the involved vehicles and witnesses to the accident. This form may also indicate whether and to whom any traffic citations were issued, the statutory citation for the offenses, a description of the offense and the date, time and location of the court date.
