What should growers do if they suspect Fusarium wilt in their cotton crops?
Early detection and containment of new outbreaks are the key strategies for managing Fusarium wilt of cotton. All farm staff and contractors should be advised of the symptoms of the disease and encouraged to be on the lookout for suspect plant systems in-crop. Growers are encouraged to send stem sections from suspect plants for examination at the DPI&F’s Plant Pathology Laboratories in Toowoomba or Indooroopilly. Early detection of disease outbreaks will enable management strategies to be implemented quickly to minimise the spread of the disease. For more details contact your local cotton consultant or cotton extension officer. A range of information brochures on fusarium wilt and farm hygiene are available from the Cotton Catchment Communities CRC, Locked Bag 1000, Narrabri NSW 2390. Ph (02) 6799 1500. Fx (02) 6799 1582.
