What should be the role of godparents in modern Christianity?

The role of Godparents in modern Christianity has no ground anymore. It used to be that If the parents died then the Godparents would take over the role and look after those children. In modern day society the social services have the final say of where the children go to live and 99.9% they go and live with a relative even if the will states that they live with the godparents. A lot of people have their children christened even if they don’t go to church and are not practising Christians. They go through with the service and they name best mates as the godparents without a thought of what the role should mean. Once they have set foot in church for the christening they never step back in to the church again unless it’s for another christening, weddings & funerals.
