What should be the field layout of a typical baseball field?
Being a game played on an enclosed field and between two teams with each team comprising of nine players, the laying of the field is based on certain specifications and these should be strictly adhered to. According to these specifications, the dimensions of the infield also referred to as the diamond should be a 90×90 foot square. A typical fair territory outfield should be equal or greater than 250 feet from the home base to either the fence or any nearest obstruction. Foul lines extending to about 320 feet or greater and about 400 ft or greater to center field are generally preferred. The portion of the field within the foul lines is deemed fair territory and anything lying beyond it is considered foul territory. The home plate and the base lines should be at the same level, but the pitchers mound or plate should be about 10 inches above the home plate level and at a distance of 60.6 ft away from it.
