What should a Western couple expect at a wedding in Hong Kong?
I am a Chinese linguist and have experienced many Chinese events. Generally, nowadays the wedding culture in China is extremely westernized, so you can calm down…lol Chinese wedding ceremonies are held in hotels/restaurants. They start out with a tea drinking ceremony and end with a lot of eating drinking. If you are a male, you should have a drink with the groom to get him really drunk. From what I understand, the family plays tricks on the couple to keep them from being able to go back to their hotel room. Some things you should DO include: learn how to say congrats in Cantonese (I speak Mandarin which is “Gongxi”) wear something with red on it (symbolic to weddings) put the money in a red envelope (hongbao) and have fun Some things you should NOT DO include: get offended by their sometimes embarrassing questions (i.e. how much money do you make?) get offended by their stereotyping of westerners put chopsticks in a bowl sticking out (symbolic of funerals) grab something from someon
