What services are provided by the patrol?
The Florida Highway Patrols first priority is to maintain safety on Floridas highways. Troopers accomplish this through frequent patrol and enforcement of traffic laws; by responding to, investigating, and clearing the highway of traffic crashes; and by assisting stranded motorists and those in need of assistance for medical emergencies while traveling the states highways. Highway safety issues are addressed in several ways. The most common mode of enforcement is the use of marked cars to patrol the highways. Patrol cars are augmented with aerial patrol to identify violators and traffic hazards and to assist in search and rescue missions. Motorcycles are used to gain faster access to crash scenes in congested areas as well as areas not readily accessible by patrol cars. They are also used for special enforcement activities such as DUI checkpoints. Traffic homicide investigations are also a major responsibility of the FHP.
