All Australian Government funded residential aged care homes must meet the requirements of the Aged Care Act 1997 (the Act) and the Principles under the Act. This includes meeting the Accreditation Standards and Specified Care and Services, under the Quality of Care Principles 1997. The care and services that an approved provider must provide are set out in Schedule 1 to the Quality of Care Principles. Part 2 lists the Specified Care and Services to be provided to all residents who need them (low care and high care). These include: daily living activities; meals and refreshments; emotional support; treatment and procedures (such as assistance with taking medications); recreational therapy; rehabilitation support; assistance in obtaining heath practitioner services; assistance in obtaining access to specialised therapy services; and support for residents living with cognitive impairment.
