What sentence would be given for murder in todays British legal system?
if convicted of murder you automatically receive a life sentence, what happens then is the judge will set a minimum term, (this means the amount of years you have to do before become eligible to start applying for parole) on rare occasions the judge may set a ‘whole life’ sentence, this is where the person will be locked up until they die with no chance of ever getting free, but that is only reserved for the most terrible crimes, (serial killers, mass murderers, people who have already served time for murder, or people considered so dangerous they can never be let out again) but this is very rare and there are only a handful of ‘natural lifers’ currently in the prison system. the judge will set a minimum term based on several factors, the amount of pre-planning, any mitigating circumstances (i.e was ‘wife beaten by her husband’) i’d suggest if the murder in your story was straightforward and she just killed him to get rid of him or for his money, that you give her a life sentence with
