What self-defence do policemen in the UK learn?
We learn empty hand techniques such as strikes and holds and baton techniques and use of incapacitant spray. We also use wrist locks and other escorting techniques. Most of the techniques now are simple to use and based on real scenarios rather then more formal martial arts techniques as we do not get enough training to master anything complex. Taser is now more commonplace in the UK and certain officers receive training in this device. Certain officers are on Police Support Units (Riot teams) and they are trained to a higher level in dealing with violent and aggressive prisoners and have better equipment to do so. The PSU also train in quick entry to buildings and effective use of shields. These officers normally carry out a response and patrol function and are called as needed. Most officers use at least some of these techniques on a daily/weekly basis whilst arresting uncooperative (usually drunk) people.
