What seems to be the number 1 issue that sixth graders have in making the adjustment to middle school?
Many of the problems that arise, in our experience, stem from some sixth graders` lack of responsibility and/or organizational skills. It is very important that sixth graders keep their binders organized and file their papers according to subject. All 6th grade teachers work with students almost daily in guiding them to properly organize their binders. Homework should be placed in the appropriate binder and then brought to class on time. Furthermore, it is the students` responsibility to complete their absentee make-up work and then turn in the assignments in a prompt manner. Many sixth graders struggle with this procedure. You can help by reminding students to complete work after an absence, and then following up on the work being turned in.
