Well, in the early morning hours of Sept. 7, 1970 a second baseman for the Dallas-Fort Worth Spurs named Ron Shelton and Amarillo Giants first baseman Dave Kingman were in an Amarillo bar having a few drinks. The final day of the Texas League season was Sept. 7. Shelton and Kingman decided to head out to Memorial Stadium after leaving the bar and turned on the field sprinklers so the final game of the season would be canceled because of the soppy field. Shelton and Kingman did a number on the field. It was a mess. But the stubborn owner of the Amarillo Giants had helicopters fly over the field and set gas on fire on the field to help dry the place out.
