What rules should guide DSS user interface design?

The software interface between the computer application and the user often determines whether a specific DSS will be used and whether it will be used effectively. Some readers might criticize my use of the word “rules” rather than a term like “guidelines” and some might be concerned about my focus only on the software interface, rather than looking more broadly at the total user experience. Those concerns have been noted and my choice is to proceed with a heavily prescriptive, modestly technical discussion of how to develop an interface for a wide variety of computerized decision support systems. In general, my focus is on what a DSS designer should know and do. I do not want to distract actual and would be DSS designers with a nebulous term like user experience.
