What room temperature is my violet or streptocarpus most comfortable at?
Violets prefer temperatures ranging from 60 degrees to 80 degrees. Don’t worry however, they can survive temperature of 55 degrees or over 90 degrees for short periods of time. Lower temperatures will cause the violets to grow very slowly, while hotter temperatures may cause the leaves to wilt and rot. I have successfully grown violets in a basement that often would reach 55 degrees. I now grow my plants in my house, which is not air-conditioned, and I have not had any problems. In the case of an emergency (as in a loss of power during the winter or a heat wave) there are a number of things that can help to protect your plants. If it is too cold place humidity domes over your plants, if possible. Plants do release some heat and grouping all the plants together and placing a dome over them will help them stay a little warmer. Placing plastic sheeting over your light stand will also help. If it has been extremely hot turn off the lights, as the lights will just add to the extreme heat. M
