What role will Coastal Chatham County play in the First Congressional District race?
Coastal Georgia will play a pivotal role in the upcoming November elections, but in this traditionally conservative area of the state, what are some of the issues that may play a role in determining who will be the next representative of the First Congressional District of Georgia? Chatham County is one example which provides an opportunity for Democrats to make up ground in the state to Republicans. The following areas will be a battleground within southern and coastal Chatham County: Wilmington Island with a population of more than 14,000 residents according to the 2000 Census, Georgetown (approx. 11,000), Skidaway Island (approx. 7,000), Whitemarsh Island (approx. 6,000), Thunderbolt (approx. 2,400) and Tybee Island with approximately 3,400 residents according to the 2000 census.
