Dix: Although very virtuous and proper, formal experiments are unlikely to be a core part of many practical design processes. However, CS students should certainly know about the importance of empirical data and the fact that their intuition about what will work is often not reliable. Rather than over-emphasizing an approach they are unlikely to use it is perhaps better to simply instill these values and suggest the use of `quick and dirty’ empirical methods such as cooperative evaluation or expert techniques such as cognitive walkthroughs or heuristic evaluation (which CS students seem to like).
