What role, if any, should the county play in controlling illegal immigration?
Baker: The county should and does support efforts to insure that illegal immigrants do not drain our resources and take valuable jobs. County policy requires that all contractors verify the status of their work force to insure no illegal immigrants. The county also is active in verifying status upon arrest of an individual. We need to continue to support our legal population by remaining vigilant that illegals are not being supported by county funds or remaining unchecked in our population. Barr: Internally during the course of county employment application and review process, all efforts to ensure citizenship, drivers license, background check and alike are currently a requirement. Externally as RFIs are going out for public bidding projects, all approved bidding contractors, suppliers and vendors would simply show proof, sign an affidavit or utilize E-Verify for their internal employment controls.
