The solicitor general plays a very important role in the federal judicial system. He is the third highest ranking member in The Department of Justice and he represents the national government before the Supreme Court. The solicitor general decides if the government should appeal lower court decisions, review and modify them and decided if an amicus curiae brief should be filed. The solicitor general’s objective is to create a cohesive program for the executive branch in the Supreme Court. The solicitor general is often called “the tenth justice” because they decide what issues should be brought before the Supreme Court.
