What role does pH play in skin care? What is the normal pH of healthy skin?
pH refers to the balance of acid and alkali in our skin. That is, how acidic your skin is. Normal skin pH is said to be somewhat acidic and in the range of 4.2. to 5.6 and it varies from one part of the body to another.
The skins pH value is one of the major contributors to acne treatments and other skin problems. P.acnes is a normal bacteria found in all persons regardless of the presence or absence of acne. However, in individuals prone to acne, the number of P.acnes is greatly increased. It has been found that the growth of P.acnes is very much dependent on the pH value of the skin. Its growth is at its minimum at the normal skin pH of 5.5. A slight shift towards the alkaline pH would provide a better environment for P.acnes to thrive.
pH is a measure of the acidity and alkalinity of a solution. A lower pH indicates a more acidic solution (which carries more potential for redness and irritation). A higher pH means a more alkaline solution (which some can find drying). The pH of normal, healthy skin can be anywhere from 4.0 to 6.0. Each Earth Science product is precisely pH balanced for specific suitability.
