What role does music play in mexicos cultral lfe? ?
Interesting. I think music is very very VERY important in Mexico’s cultural life. Most people, regardless of their social status, would like typical Mexican mariachi songs, they will know them by heart, listen to them, and even have mariachi every now and then. Folk singers are popular, well known, and they sell a lot. There are some other types of regional music, like “banda” or “norteƱo” for example. Those are also widely followed by everybody, regardless of their social status. However, my guess is that the more “refined” people will not like this music instead of mariachi, since it’s less elaborated and topics of the songs are more “vulgar”. In Oaxaca, for example, I’ve been to towns where being a musician is very important, and the tune they play might seem repetitive and boring for foreigners, but people love their music. I don’t know if this has a prehispanic origin, but music is very important. Hope it helps.
