What role does emotional stress play in patients with Ulcerative Colitis?
As is true with any chronic illness, emotional stress can impact on the symptoms of UC. This is not to say that emotional stress is the CAUSE of UC, but rather patients going though a stressful time in their lives will be less tolerant of the inconveniencing symptoms that they routinely experience. Many times the stress that patients with UC experience may be a reaction to the disease itself. Often an understanding family member, close friend, or their physician will offset this stress. It is important for the patient to inform these people that they have UC. Support groups also provide an outlet and a valuable network for patients (and family members) with UC. Lastly stress can also be lessened by “healthy living” with a nutritious diet, regular exercise and plenty of rest.
