The elderly are very important in the Mexican culture. They provide oral history and they pass on this oral history of families. Because they’ve been around so long, they’re the keepers of this history. The elderly teach the rich Mexican traditions to the younger generations, in hopes that they keep them going. In terms of Day of the Dead, they are the guides that lead the younger generations by showing them what the important elements that should incorporated into the celebration are. They do this by sharing the stories of the people they’re making the ofrendas to. Since the elderly are so important to Mexican culture, how are they incorporated into this event? Every year, we invite a family whether from the local community or Mexico to build an ofrenda. It gets more difficult for the elderly to attend because of transportation.
