What role do software engineers play in movie animation/fx?
Software engineers in animation tend to animate characters that have already been designed by artists. Some people can create characters and do some programming for them, but typically there are separate people on separate jobs because focusing on one area makes you particularly good at that area. I’m in university studying Games Technology, so I have some idea of how the jobs in animation and programming differentiate. If you want to be involved in the creative process then I would recommend you get into a design-based role. My degree is based mostly on the mechanics of games animation yet I learn full-on programming in my own time, so I could potentially still get a job in software development. University is a great time to learn all the things you want to even if it’s not on your course. Don’t let your course make you feel like you’re bound down to a certain future-role. I hope this helps.
