Federal law requires that parents of a student with a disability be members of any group that makes decisions on the educational placement of their child. You have the right to obtain as much specific information as possible about the recommended placements during your IEP meeting. Some districts will tell you which placements (specific classrooms) they are recommending and describe those classrooms. Other school districts will recommend general placement categories (for example, resource specialists, special day class). Then, specific classroom assignments follow the IEP. Whichever procedure your district follows, you should request at your IEP meeting that you be included, as the law requires, in any meeting where the educational placement of your child is determined.
