What role do local governments play?
Illinois is a home rule state, allowing each county and municipality the opportunity to adopt building codes for their jurisdictions. Not all local governments choose to enact design and construction requirements. Before any construction takes place, it is important for developers to verify whether building codes are in place at the county or municipal level, or both. In any event, all statewide building requirements must be followed.
