What role do female fans play in keeping the game alive?
Female fans are more tenuous and scrappy about supporting their team. We’re not going to pick up and migrate to a new favorite just because a team’s having an off year, we’re going to grimace and cheer louder. I think women are also less willing to let a team lose, so they’ll be out there until the bitter end giving their side as much energy as possible.
Female fans are able to bring more emotions to the game. I know that my resident Flames fan can get quite angry when watching the game as can many guys when their team is losing. I think women are able to articulate how they are feeling during the game and are more open to feeling those emotions. I believe we are also interested in who the players are outside of hockey.
My team does awful marketing towards female fans (and I let them know that constantly) but yet I feel like everytime I meet a female hockey fan, she’s more passionate about the team and spends more on tickets and merchandise. It’s really an untapped market around here. Let’s face it, Rick DiPietro could sell this team more than any of the ice girls can but they promote them more.
