What role did expectations and accountability for management and labor play in achieving VPP status?
The expectations for both management and labor were increased when establishing the safety and health program to reduce the previously high injury rates. This observation indeed was validated through the findings of the document review conducted at Century Construction, Inc. According to the information obtained during the document review, new safety policies created accountability between both management and labor for the effectiveness of the safety and health program. Incentives and discipline policies established through the human resources department sought to manipulate the desired behavior of employees at Century, Inc. Therefore, the performance evaluation of Project Managers and Superintendents was linked directly to the efforts to reduce workplace injuries. There is now a metrics system used to measure safety performance. In the past, it was not mandatory for management be present for safety training sessions.
