What road rules apply in NZ?
At present in New Zealand we drive on the left side on the road and give way to the right. However, giving way to the right is one of the road rules that is currently under review and may well have changed at your commencement of hire. Check with the Hire Company before hitting the road. • What are the speed limits? Distance is measured in Kilometres and Speed in Kilometers Per Hour (kph). Urban areas are 50kph (30mph) and Highways are 100kph (60mph). Driving at over 50kph over the speed limit results in an immediate and automatic 28 day driving suspension and a court case later. You have been warned! • Will I need vehicle insurance? Every Hire Company insists on at the least third Party and Public Liability Insurance, some fully comprehensive, however, New Zealanders do not legally require any Insurance and therefore every company insists on a Bond which is fully refundable if the vehicle is returned in a clean undamaged position.
