It may sound daft but i really do think that if you have no contract in place at the end of his 6 months politely go round and give him 24 hours to leave, in 24 hours go round with 5 of your mates and if he is still there kindly help him move, i rent but through a company because i cant do with the hassle of things like this, be rough with him, get him out!

First shame on you for not getting a security deposit. Next contact a real estate attorney in your country ( I have a feeling your not in the USA, we don’t call apt’s flats). In America they would be considered a tenant at will and if they pay you 1 time a month that would be how much notice you have to give them to leave. If your country is anything like the USA the laws protect tenants rather than the property owner. It took me 4 months to get a family out of a home I had rented, no rent and lots of damage to the property.
