What rights do young homeless people have to accommodation?
If a young person is homeless, or about to become homeless, s/he can apply to the Housing Executive for help. Under the homelessness legislation, the Housing Executive has a duty to carry out enquiries when someone approaches them as homeless (there are some exceptions including those seeking asylum). What sort of assistance the Housing Executive has to provide will depend on whether the young person is: 1. Homeless or threatened with homelessness This means: They have no accommodation, or They have accommodation but it is not reasonable for them to live there. This might be because they have experienced violence, or threats of violence, in or around their home, or because their accommodation is in very poor condition, or They have accommodation but they can’t get back into it.
