What rights did the women have in the Middle Colonies?
Answer Hi Christian, There were many social and cultural restrictions that kept women from exercising many of their rights. However, under the law, women had pretty much the same rights as men. They were permitted to free speech, freedome of religion, the right to bear arms, and to due process and privacy protections. They could own property, vote, and hold public office. The real legal changes occurred when a woman married. Under most colonial laws, when a woman married a man, any property held by either became family property, effectively controlled by the man. Each family had one vote during elections, also given to the man. Married women could not enter into legally binding contracts or do other sorts of things without their husband’s permission. I hope this helps!
