What rights are there to rest periods?
It depends partly on the age of the worker. Adults must have daily rest periods of at least 11 consecutive hours in every 24-hour period and weekly rest periods of 24 hours in every seven-day period. They must also have a rest break when daily working time is more than six hours. Young workers (16 to 18-year-olds) are entitled to a daily rest period of 12 hours and a weekly rest period of two days. There are also special provisions for night-workers who should not work more than eight hours in any 24-hour period. Are there any exceptions? There are exemptions for certain sectors. And the regulations allow some provisions to apply differently to certain workers in certain circumstances. For example, the rights to rest breaks and the maximum weekly working time do not apply to workers with high degrees of responsibility and those who are responsible for determining when work is done.
