What revenue codes must I use to assure HIPAA compliant Medicaid billing?
A revenue code identifies a specific billable service type. For all inpatient and outpatient Medicaid claims, HIPAA requires providers to use revenue codes chosen from the Medicare UB92 (billing form) claims processing system. These codes are not usually chemical dependence specific. Providers must choose the code that seems to most appropriately describe the service that is being billed to Medicaid. For example, a two bed inpatient detoxification service could be billed using revenue code 0126 (Room and Board – Semi private Two Beds (Medical or General)) or an outpatient chemical dependence service could be billed with revenue code 0944 (Other Therapeutic Service- Drug Rehabilitation).
