What responsibilities do Illinois schools and the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) have under the Illinois Children’s Mental Health Act (ICMHA)?
Under the ICMHA, every school district in the State must adopt and submit to the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) a “policy for incorporating social and emotional development into [its] educational program.” Such policies must (a) address teaching social and emotional skills and assessing children’s progress in acquiring these skills and (b) include protocols for responding to children with social, emotional, or mental health problems.
