What research into public attitudes on ANPR has been done?
A study by the University of Huddersfield and West Yorkshire Police in Leeds found that 89 per cent of respondents were positive about ANPR. They could see the short and long term benefits arising from the police use of ANPR and they felt that on balance the perceived positives (e.g. crime reduction) outweighed the negatives (e.g. concerns about civil liberties). Relatively few respondents (13.5 per cent) agreed or strongly agreed that ANPR represents an infringement of their civil liberties and there was evidence to indicate that people were willing to sacrifice their privacy in favour of security.
