What representations has Hurstville Council made in relation to the refuge?
Answer – (1) Southern Sydney Youth Refuge has the following criteria for entry to the refuge: •Young people between the age of 12 to 18; children under 14 are however accepted under special circumstances. •Priority is given to young people with ties to the local area. •Young people with serious drug/alcohol problems, severe psychiatric disturbance, physical or mental disability are not accepted but may be assisted with referral to appropriate agencies. •Young people with a history of violence or of repeated offences of a serious nature are excluded. •State wards may be accepted. •Stays at previous refuges are taken into consideration to identify, for example, if there is a history of complying or failure to comply with refuge rules. All referrals are subject to a preliminary interview and placed on a 1-week trial. Emergency overnight placements are subject to the entry criteria and may be declined.
