What rehabilitation programs does Loy Yang Power have in place?
At this point in time the operational life of the mine and for that matter the power station is another 50-70 years. This means to avoid a huge job of rehabilitating the site at the end, rehabilitation is done progressively. This work concentrates on the areas of greatest disturbance that are not effected by mining operations such as the overburden dump and worked out mine batters. The guiding document for this work is the Closure/Rehabilitation Strategy which sets out the processes for planning and decision making for future land use, research and investigations, and proposed programs and timing of rehabilitation works. To guide the ongoing works there is a rolling five-year plan, which identifies upcoming works, and an annual plan, which details the current year’s work.
