What record did Hershel McGriff set at the Portland International Raceway on Sunday?”
Most guys who drive are generally fairly young in age but one man decided his need for speed would not be affected by his age. According to reports, Hershel McGriff who is 81-years-old has just qualified to race in the national NASCAR series. He smoked qualifying at the Camping World West Series even at Portland Int. Raceway. The AP Reported, “McGriff took part in Sunday’s pre-race qualifying but made the race as one of 26 drivers competing for 28 spots in the field. McGriff has not raced in a NASCAR series event since 2002.” This guy is no stranger to the track with four NASCAR Cup race wins under his belt. He is a Motorsports Hall of Fame driver. It seems McGriff is destined to race and old age is not going to stop him.
On Sunday at Portland International Raceway Hershel McGriff became the oldest NASCAR driver after the 81 year old completed the Salute to the Troops 125 NASCAR Camping World Series West race. Hershel qualified his Park Corporation Chevrolet on the pole, but was forced by NASCAR to start on the back row after changing his carburetor. Breaking his own record as the oldest driver, Hershel’s career has spanned over six decades. In 1954 Hershel was convinced by Brian France to compete full-time in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series where he earned four victories. Hershel has also collected 37 triumphs in the West Series.
