What REALLY happened at the Winchester Cathedral on p1 of the big book?
On p10, Bill considers his conception of a Higher Power and says ‘That war- time day in old Winchester Cathedral came back again’ so it must tie to something spiritual Then on p12, Bill says ‘the real significance of my experience in the Cathedral burst upon me. For a brief moment, I had needed and wanted God. There had been a humble willingness to have Him with me– and He came.’ So how did God come? What happened was that he was in such awe of the magnificent architecture that he lost his sense of ego-bound self and opened up to something much greater than himself. On p1, Bill didn’t say he went outside, but said ‘much MOVED, I wandered outside.’ He doesn’t say I looked, but ‘my attention was CAUGHT’.
