What realationship did the avigon papacy have to the Great Schism?

You must not confuse the “Great Schism” of 1052 AD between Rome & Constantinople & the “Great Western Schism” which is what the Avignon Papacy was about. I can’t remember the year the western schism began…sorry. What I can tell you is that originally, the papacy had moved to Avignon for some 60 years before a Pope decided to bring it back to Rome. When that happened, the King of France wanted to keep the Papacy in Avignon & appointed his own Pope. This is how the western schism began; with a Pope in Rome & a Pope in Avignon. The schism ended at the council of Trent & it was declared that the true succession of Popes followed the line of Popes of Rome. All the schismatic Popes of Avignon were declared Anti Popes. Edit: The Great Schism of 1052 AD still exists today.
