Ask who the breeders are! The pup may come from a puppy mill, in which case she may not have been properly checked for all the possible genetic disorders common to the breed. Check the BDKC online and make SURE she’s registered. If you’re in the UK, it’s great that she’s registered there; if you’re in the USA, though, where will you show her if she’s not acceptable to the AKC? Ask for her medical records so you can verify that she was vet checked and that both parents are OFA checked for genetic disorders. If the pet shop can’t verify it, call the breeder – if you can’t get copies of the records, the chances are the records don’t exist and the dog hasn’t been checked. Most pet shop dogs come from puppy mills, so if you get the name of the breeder, check up on him. If possible, go to his location and look at the site.
