What questions might Child Abuse Report Line staff ask during the process of taking a notification?
In general CARL staff will ask questions to ensure they have all the information available about a child’s situation so they can assess what Families SA response, if any, is appropriate. When notifications are not about immediate and urgent risks, CARL staff may ask clarifying questions based on the pre-notification checklist. Questions may include whether: • your concerns have been raised with parents • referrals to other services have been made/offered • the family has taken up referrals or dismissed/ignored concerns • the child has been given opportunity to provide more information about the ‘issue’ through open questions • there are other indicators of neglect or abuse • discussion has occurred with the site’s leadership team. CARL staff will not ask notifiers to make home visits. However, CARL staff may advise notifiers against a home visit based on information held by Families SA.
